Question 1

Are there any prerequisites for using Lumada?

Accepted Answer

No. You can use Lumada immediately with the product information you already have. No installation, IT project or integration on your side is required. Simply upload your data or classify items individually.

Question 2

Can I not just use ChatGPT for tariff classification?

Accepted Answer

General-purpose AI models are not designed for tariff classification. They lack domain-specific training, cannot guarantee auditability and often produce incorrect codes. Lumada uses up-to-date customs reference data, domain-tuned models and a transparent reasoning chain that meets customs authorities' expectations.

Question 3

What is an HS code, and why is tariff code classification important?

Accepted Answer

The Harmonized System (HS) code is an international nomenclature maintained by the World Customs Organization. It is a 6-digit code that underpins national tariffs. Tariff codes are extensions of the HS code on the country-level (TARES, TARIC, HTSUS, etc.). Tariff codes are used to determine applicable duties, taxes and import/export restrictions. Submitting an incorrect tariff code in your customs declaration can lead to goods being delayed at the border, overpayment or underpayment of duties and taxes as well as penalties and fines. Accurate classification is therefore required for any company moving goods across borders.

Question 4

Which customs tariffs do you support?

Accepted Answer

Lumada supports the Harmonized System (HS) and the Swiss customs tariff (TARES). TARIC and HTSUS are in development and will be released soon.

Question 5

How much information is required to request a classification?

Accepted Answer

Usually, a short textual description is enough. If information is missing, Lumada highlights which details are required for an accurate classification. This makes classification straightforward and helps you improve your master data quickly.
